What is Phenibut?
- Chemical Name: β-phenyl-γ-aminobutyric acid, also known as phenigam, fenibut, PhGABA.
- Developed in the Soviet Union around the 1960s. Approved in some Eastern European countries for use as an anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), sleep aid, and to treat vestibular disorders.
Risks, Side Effects, and Dependence
- Side effects can include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, poor coordination, fatigue and risk of oversedation.
- With high doses or misuse, serious risks: breathing problems, unconsciousness, possibly coma.
- Dependence & Withdrawal: Even after a few days of more than occasional use people may develop tolerance and dependence. Withdrawal symptoms reported include anxiety rebound, insomnia, muscle aches, nausea, agitation, etc.
